my dad’s wife works at a popular southern grocery store. she was telling us about this when they were here for thanksgiving but she also wrote it up and sent it as an email to everyone she knows. this happened to her personally as she worked at the checkout line the week before thanksgiving. i think it’s a great example of what this time of year is supposed to be – what most people have forgotten with all of their concerns about santa and gifts.
Early one morning a boy around 5 years old came in carrying a Rubbermaid container of coins. His mom told me it was his piggy bank money and that he could do with it as he wanted and asked me to help him. I turned the coins into bills ($32.42) and he went shopping. I got busy with other customers but I saw him check out the toys, school supplies and walk up and down the aisles. At one point he asked me what the brown bags with a Holiday tag on were. I told him that they contained food for the needy and showed him what was in one. Half an hour later he came back to my register with a Hot Wheel car and one of the bags of food for the needy. I looked at his mom and she nodded her head telling me to go ahead. I rang it up and when he saw he still had some money he asked if it was enough for another bag. It was and we picked out another one. He told me he saw some people crying on TV because they were hungry and he said that he always had enough food. A very happy and proud mom left the store with her son and I had to admit I had a huge smile but also a tear.
